Day Twelve
Rising early, we began a very strenous day of climbing, first to Evolution Lake, then Sapphire Lake, Wanda Lake, and, finally, Muir Pass. At Muir Pass there is a stone hut that would do as emergency shelter should one be caught by a storm, but is used mostly by the resident marmot! Leaving the pass we descended past Helen Lake and then continued down the Middle Fork Kings River into Le Conte Canyon. We had planned to camp in Big Pete Meadow, but as daylight was fast departing, we chose a site next to the trail before the final descent to Big Pete Meadow - not good, but beggers can't be choosers!
