Day Five

Leaving Deer Creek the trail begins opening up and rounding a series of ridges, where we met the first ultralight backpacker we had seen on this trip - a man carrying a GoLite Gust pack. As the trail gradually climbs toward Duck Creek, it affords an impressive view of Cascade Valley and the Silver Divide. After eating lunch at Duck Creek, which had a small campsite, we passed the trail to Duck Lake leading uphill to our left, and then arrived at a saddle and started down to Purple Lake. At the trail junction at Purple Lake we turned left and climbed a short way to campsites above the lake.
